Two Minneapolis families are grieving after a tragedy at Annunciation Catholic School claimed the lives of Fletcher Merkel,
8, and Harper Moyski, 10. Both are remembered for their joy, energy, and love, and their families are turning sorrow into calls for change.
At a memorial outside the church, parents and community members honored the children while urging accountability and action
to prevent future tragedies. Fletcher’s father, Jesse Merkel, described his son as adventurous, happiest outdoors,
fishing, or cooking, and asked that people remember his spirit rather than the circumstances of his death. Harper’s parents, Michael Moyski
and Jackie Flavin, recalled her laughter that could light up any room, and spoke of the grief felt by her younger sister who adored her.
“No family should endure this pain,” they said, calling on leaders to prioritize safety and mental health.
The incident left 18 injured—15 of them children—but thanks to swift action by staff and students,
all are expected to survive. Jesse Merkel praised their bravery, saying the outcome could have been far worse.
Vigils and tributes continue, while officials emphasize healing and unity.
Flags will fly at half-staff until August 31, ensuring Fletcher and Harper’s memories inspire change.
