What began as an ordinary evening in Charlotte turned into

tragedy on August 22, when 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska

was fatally attacked while boarding a train. Just minutes earlier,

she had texted her boyfriend, Stanislav “Stas” Nikulytsia, that she would be home soon.

Her sudden death shocked family, friends, and the wider community,

sparking outrage over how the justice system failed to prevent it.

Iryna fled Ukraine in 2022 with her family, determined

to build a safer life. She worked at a pizzeria while studying

English at community college, quickly becoming known for her kindness and determination.

Decarlos Brown Jr., who had been arrested 14 times but

was released on cashless bail by Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes.
