The community of Villarrica, in Chile’s La Araucanía region, is
mourning the heartbreaking loss of brothers Matías and Benjamín Sobarzo,
ages 15 and 13. What began as a joyful family tradition on the
eve of Chile’s national celebrations turned into a moment of
tragedy that has deeply impacted their loved ones, friends, and neighbors.
According to local reports, the family was preparing to raise
a flag at their home when the accident occurred. Despite receiving
immediate medical care, both brothers passed away, while their mother,
who was also injured, remains in recovery at the hospital.
The news spread quickly, bringing an outpouring of solidarity,
tributes, and support from classmates, teachers, and community
members who remembered the boys as cheerful, talented, and full of life.
Their father, Marcelo Sobarzo, shared his immense grief, saying
it was nearly impossible to process such a sudden loss. Teachers
and classmates from the Humanities School of Villarrica gathered
in an emotional ceremony to pay tribute to the brothers, recalling
their optimism, energy, and kindness that touched everyone who knew them.
The tragedy has left a lasting mark on Villarrica, transforming what
should have been a festive period into one of mourning and reflection.
Yet, as the community comes together to support the family,
the legacy of Matías and Benjamín lives on in the memories of
those who cherished them and in the love they brought to their community.
