A city shopping district was rocked Monday evening by gunfire
that left two people dead, including a 20-year-old woman struck by a stray bullet.
The shooting erupted around 5:30 p.m. on Fifth Street, turning
a busy evening into chaos as gunmen opened fire in the crowded area.
Witnesses described panic as shoppers and pedestrians fled for safety.
The young woman, heading to submit a job application,
was hit in the abdomen while seeking cover. Good Samaritans rushed her to the hospital,
but she died shortly after arrival. The intended target, a 45-year-old shopkeeper, was also killed.
Police said the shooting reflects a troubling rise in violence in the district. Responding quickly, officers pursued
the suspects and apprehended a 17-year-old male armed with a gun. He had a prior record for weapons offenses
and attempted murder. Investigators are still piecing together the circumstances and possible involvement of others.
The tragedy has left the community shaken, mourning the loss of innocent life. Officials are urging vigilance
and cooperation from residents while calling for stronger safety measures. For many, the deaths highlight
the urgent need to address rising violence and restore a sense of security to the city’s streets.
