A Dairy Queen in Kewaskum, Wisconsin, has sparked national debate after a message displayed in its front window
went viral. The sign, posted by owner Kevin Scheunemann, declares the restaurant’s pride in celebrating Christmas,
Easter, and Veterans Day, reflecting what he calls his team’s devotion to “faith and country.”
Scheunemann says he originally put up the sign four years ago after a customer complained about Christian music
being played in the restaurant. For years, it drew little attention—until a visiting tourist from Oregon posted
a photo online, igniting fierce discussion over inclusivity and freedom of expression.
Supporters have praised the owner’s transparency and patriotism, while critics argue the message excludes
those of other faiths or beliefs. Local businesses have defended Scheunemann, insisting customers are free to dine elsewhere if they disagree.
In response, Dairy Queen’s corporate office clarified that the franchise’s message reflects only the owner’s personal views,
not company policy. The brand emphasized that all locations are expected to treat every customer with respect, regardless of religion or background.
The sign’s resurgence has turned a small-town restaurant into the center of a national conversation about faith,
business values, and freedom of expression in public spaces.
