Vice President JD Vance publicly criticized Mitch McConnell after the former
Senate GOP leader was the only Republican to vote against Elbridge Colby,
Donald Trump’s nominee for top Pentagon policy strategist. Vance
called McConnell’s vote “political pettiness,” igniting backlash
from MAGA conservatives.McConnell argued that confirming Colby could damage U.S. alliances,
while Trump allies praised Colby as a top foreign policy thinker
focused on countering China. Despite McConnell’s opposition, Colby was confirmed by a 54–45 vote,
mostly along party lines. The feud deepened as McConnell also criticized
Trump for downplaying Russia’s role in the Ukraine war, warning that
such views show a dangerous misunderstanding of international leverage.
While he didn’t name Trump directly, McConnell condemned both Trump’s
comments and the Biden administration’s “half-measures” on Ukraine.
The rift highlights growing tensions within the GOP over foreign policy, especially regarding China and Russia.
