Suspect in Midtown NYC Shooting Identified as Former Athlete Battling Mental Health Issues

Shooter in Midtown NYC Tragedy Linked to Mental Health, CTE Fears

Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, has been identified as the gunman in the July 28, 2025, Midtown Manhattan

shooting that killed four people, including off-duty NYPD Officer Didarul Islam. Once a promising

high school athlete, Tamura’s life veered off track after graduation, leading to a casino job and declining mental health.

Authorities say Tamura drove cross-country, parked near 345 Park Avenue, and entered the building alone before

the fatal rampage. He was later found dead from a self-inflicted wound. A handwritten note on him referenced

chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), blaming repeated head injuries from football for his deteriorating mental state.

While the NFL has offices in the building, it’s unclear if it was a target. Tamura’s writings expressed

resentment toward football and its long-term effects. Police recovered weapons, ammunition, and prescription drugs from his car.

Mayor Eric Adams offered condolences and praised first responders. A GoFundMe has been created

to support Officer Islam’s pregnant wife and two young children.

The incident has sparked renewed debates on mental health, sports-related brain injuries, and gun access.
